After a week of finals and working 50+ hours, Kate fell asleep while driving one night. She hit the guardrail, which sliced through the bottom of her right leg. Surgeons were unable to save her leg and had to amputate. She endured another 17 surgeries before she was released. Now fitted with a C-leg, Kate completed her college degree and leads a very active life.
